Coffee Enemas and UTIs: What You Need to Know for Safe Use

It is said that all disease begins in the gut—this signifies the role of intestinal health in leading a healthy life.

Dear readers, what do you think is the most crucial organ of your body on which the overall health of the body depends? THINK ABOUT IT……is it the liver, is it the kidney, or is it the lungs?

You will be surprised; this crucial part that we are talking about is “INTESTINE.” As they say, until your intestine is not clear, NO body part cannot work properly.

And please get rid of this myth as well that if you think you go to the bathroom twice or thrice a day, that means your intestine is clean. Over years of unhealthy habits such as eating junk food, sugary drinks, & bad fats—waste builds up on your intestinal walls. This buildup can lead to toxins being absorbed into your bloodstream and may cause complex diseases.

According to Norman Walker’s studies, different parts of the intestine are connected to various organs. Toxins in a specific intestinal area can impact the corresponding organ, leading to disease.

But worry not; Detox techniques like Coffee Enema have entered the picture.  Don’t get baffled, we are not introducing any new technique. Enema is an Ancient Yogic practice, as described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika over 1,000 years ago, mentioning “Jal Basti” for cleansing.  However, certain health conditions may require you to avoid this practice.

Did You Know Fact About Coffee Enema

So, in this blog, let's explore opting for Coffee Enemas & their safety concern in urinary tract infections.

What are Coffee Enemas & their Benefits?

Coffee enemas are like regular enemas (inserting liquid through a dedicated device into your bottom to help clean out your intestines or make you poop), except they involve inserting an enema that’s filled with fully brewed coffee. Many supporters who have confidence in coffee enemas say it has the potential to help boost your immunity, increase your energy, and remove toxins from your body. Additionally, the supporters say that it can help address a number of conditions, as well as may help relieve chronic constipation.

In a 2014 study  by Kim Eun Sun et al.,

What they studied: They tested whether using coffee enema with the combination of regular bowel-cleaning drink (PEG) could help clean the small intestine better for a procedure called video capsule endoscopy (VCE).

How they conducted the study:

  • They divided 34 patients into two groups: Group 1: Got a coffee enema plus the bowel-cleaning drink & Group 2: Only got the bowel-cleaning drink.

  • The team compared how clean the small intestine was in the divided group.

What they found:

  • The use of the coffee enema helped clean the middle and end parts of the small intestine better.

  • The good news was no one in the coffee enema group faced any kind of problems/side effects.

The team concluded: That coffee enemas could be a safe option, but more research is needed to confirm its safety.

Whether a coffee enema is safe for you or not is something that definitely needs professional advice. However, there are certain conditions in which you need to avoid Coffee Enemas, such as in the case of  Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).

Coffee Enemas are not to be used in UTIs!

There is not sufficient clinical information regarding this concern on the internet. So, as a general awareness, we say to avoid them because your body in UTIs is already under stress. That's why you avoid any kind of insertion into your body.

The risks that Coffee Enemas carries in case of UTIs are:

  • This procedure can lead to adverse effects, such as colitis, inflammation of the colon, rectal burns, and infections. This can be due to improper administration, unhygienic or unsterile equipment.

  • During infection, there are electrolyte imbalances in the body. Coffee Enemas during UTIs can further complicate the condition.

The bottom line is the use of Coffee Enemas for its potential health benefits needs more clarification from the scientific community. But opting for Coffee Enemas in case of dealing with UTIs is definitely NOT a good choice. Wellness Extract says if you are including any new regimen in your routine, first educate yourself about the risks and benefits of the procedure from experts.
