The Incredible Journey of Colostrum–From the Era of Rishis to Today’s Research

TL; DR

Bovine colostrum has been valued since ancient Indian traditions for its healing and nourishing properties. Today, scientific research supports its benefits for immunity, gut health, and tissue repair, making it a powerful bridge between traditional wisdom and modern wellness.

It may sound a bit bold! But here’s the truth: what we call “modern science” often gets credit for discoveries that aren’t entirely new. Many of these ideas were already known to ancient Indian sages or rishis?

One such timeless or priceless treasure is "bovine colostrum (BC), aka nature's first superfood." Centuries ago, rishis & munis extensively used bovine colostrum for its health benefits.

Once revered in ancient Indian philosophy, modern science now validates bovine colostrum's health benefits for humans. In this blog, we will see how Indian ancestors used colostrum and the scientific breakthroughs that highlight its potential benefits today.

Let's walk through the incredible history of the colostrum, spanning almost 1,000 years.

What is Bovine Colostrum

Known as the "first milk" or the "first food," bovine colostrum (BC) is produced by healthy mammary glands up until the first 72 hours after delivery. Thereafter, Bovine Colostrum assumes the normal rheological (flow properties), nutritional, microbiological, & physicochemical properties of breastmilk.

Bovine colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins, growth factors, and other nutrients that protect your gut health and build your immunity.

Did You Know?

Growth factor concentration in colostrum peaks within the first 10 hours after birth, making early-harvest colostrum especially potent.

For What Purpose Did Indian Rishis Use Colostrum

Both traditional Ayurvedic medicine and the ancient Indian sages, have recorded the use of colostrum for both medical and spiritual objectives (Rocha et al., 2016)1.

  • Since cows were first domesticated, their colostrum nutrition has been recognized for its protective and nourishing properties.

Unfortunately, much of this wisdom was lost due to wars, invasions, and natural calamities. Later, numerous researchers and scholars exhibited clinical and non-clinical investigations to study the potential of colostrum for humans.

Interesting Fact

For 100 years, Scandinavians celebrated the birth of healthy baby calves with a dessert made from colostrum & honey.

History of Colostrum: The Research Timeline

Let's see the history of bovine colostrum and its uses over time (Institute of Colostrum Research)2.

Year

Key Discovery

1892

Paul Ehrlich demonstrated that mice immunized against plant toxins transferred immunity to their newborns via colostrum. Later, he proposed colostrum benefits for immunity. This development helped him earn the 1908 Nobel Prize.

Late 19th century

In this century, with the efforts of many dedicated scholars, scientific literature began to recognize colostrum's antibacterial properties.

In the 1950s

Dr. Albert Sabin was known as the father of the polio vaccine. He identified antibodies against poliovirus in the colostrum. He further defended its therapeutic use in children who are at risk of polio infection.

1920

Spolverini showed her support for using cow bovine colostrum in baby food to keep infections in human children at bay.

1922

Smith & Little demonstrated the antibacterial properties of colostrum in calves by showing that 8 out of 12 calves that did not receive BC did not survive. By contrast, all 10 calves that consumed BC survived (Smith et al., 1922)3

Kummer was also the first to show that BC from non-immunized cows can protect babies from gastrointestinal illnesses.

1963

Campbell & Peterson dedicated themselves to deep research on the colostrum. The focus of their study was mainly on the human safety profile and potential medicinal benefits of BC from immunized cows (Rocha et al., 2016)1

They also developed a method to produce immune colostrum by administering weakened viruses to cows before childbirth.

1998

McConnell & her dedicated team at Otago University also found something useful about BC's composition. They observed that pasture-fed cows' colostrum had higher antibody levels than hyperimmunized cows' colostrum (colostrum from cows immunized against specific antigens).

2021

Jogi Reena and her team conducted a study. The team observed that BC has the potential to be anti-aging by preserving telomere length (present on the chromosomal ends). Also, a longer telomere length is a positive sign for the body and increasing the proliferation rate of the fibroblast control cells (skin cells responsible for collagen production & skin structure maintenance) (Jogi et al., 2021)4.

2024

A review article showed that enzyme, casein, and albumin concentrations can be higher in colostrum than in milk. As per this article, BC contains a useful constituent, Lactoperoxidase (LPO). LPO is an enzyme known for its broad antimicrobial activity (Duan et al., 2024)5.

Recent research highlighted that, unlike regular milk, colostrum is rich in:

  1. Immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM)

Antibodies that defend the body against pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and environmental toxins. Builds your immunity and protects you from falling sick again and again.

  1. Growth factors (IGF-1, IGF-2, TGF-α, TGF-β)

They can promote wound healing through tissue repair processes and cell proliferation. Additionally, they may also be useful as therapeutic agents for bone-related conditions. They carry the potential to encourage the regeneration of deteriorating tissues.

  1. Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin is a multifunctional iron-binding protein. It is found in colostrum and milk and helps build immunity. Lactoferrin is responsible for iron absorption and protects individuals against viruses, fever, and other conditions.

  1. Lactoperoxidase (LPO)

In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, LPO has been shown to generate middle compounds, suggesting a wide range of antimicrobial activities.

But Do You Know Not All Colostrum Supplements Works

If you're excited to try colostrum, or your doctor suggests bovine colostrum, choose a source that prioritizes cow welfare, pasture feeding, and rigorous quality testing.

Shop Wellness Extract's Bovine Colostrum Powder, sourced from pasture-raised cows and standardized for real health benefits.

Final Words

So far, extensive research on the potential health benefits of colostrum has been quite impressive. Today, however, commercial practices often compromise quality, with cows receiving poor-quality feed, living in unhygienic conditions, and being injected with hormones to increase production.

The source, farming practices, collection and processing all affect the final product. Choose a high-quality colostrum supplement and experience the real benefits of colostrum.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Is colostrum better in powder or capsules?

Colostrum powder offers better absorption than capsules. Additionally, in powder form, you can adjust the dose as needed.

Q2. Is colostrum considered vegetarian?

Yes, colostrum is a dairy product, and it has the same status as other dairy products (milk, butter, and curd).

Q3. What is better, collagen or colostrum?

The choice between collagen and colostrum depends on your health needs. If you want to strengthen your nails, skin, and hair, go for colostrum. However, if your goal is immunity or gut health, colostrum is the best choice.

Q4. What are the health benefits of colostrum?

The key benefits of colostrum include enhanced immune and gut health. Consistent use of colostrum may aid muscle repair and provide high-density nutrition.

Q5. How to use bovine colostrum powder?

You can either use bovine colostrum powder in plain water, juices, smoothies, or yogurt. Additionally, you can also try quick colostrum recipes for kids, by mixing the powder into their favorite shakes and desserts.
