Lactoferrin is a protein found naturally in human and animal milk, especially colostrum, the very first milk a baby gets after birth. There's no single lactoferrin dosage that works for everyone. What the research actually shows is that dosage depends on what you're taking lactoferrin for: 

  • For iron support: Studies on iron deficiency anemia, including in pregnant women, used around 100mg twice daily (200mg/day total). 3 4 

  • For skin/acne: A 2017 clinical trial used 100mg twice daily (200mg/day), combined with vitamin E and zinc, over 12 weeks. 

  • For visceral fat/metabolic support: The trial discussed earlier used 300mg/day of enteric-coated lactoferrin over 8 weeks. 

  • For bone health: The postmenopausal bone study used a lower dose (around 125mg), though it tested a lactoferrin-ribonuclease blend rather than lactoferrin alone, so it's not a clean comparison. 

Given this range, a reasonable starting point is 100-200mg/day, adjusted based on what you're targeting and in consultation with a healthcare provider, especially if you're aiming for a specific benefit rather than general support. 

Best time to take Lactoferrin: There's no strict rule here either. Some people take it on an empty stomach, others prefer it with food if their stomach is sensitive. What matters more than timing is taking it consistently, day to day. 

How to Choose a Quality Lactoferrin Supplement 

Look for bovine-sourced lactoferrin that's third-party tested, free of unnecessary additives, and dosed within the range actual studies have used. 

Here's what to check for: 

  • Sourcing: Bovine lactoferrin is the form used in virtually all research and supplements.  

  • Third-party testing: Choose brands that test for purity and potency, not just label claims. 

  • Clean formula: Avoid products with unnecessary fillers or additives that dilute what you're actually paying for. 

  • Right dose: Match the dosage to what's actually been studied (100-300mg/day, per the research above), not just what's cheapest on the shelf.
